Working with Burnside

In recent years I had the opportunity to mentor an up-and-coming ecologist and engineer. He asked a lot of questions because it was important for him to get things done right. On occasion, he would come to my office and talk about project challenges, client issues, and personal growth. Sometimes he would talk and sometimes I would instruct.

Over the same period, I had the opportunity to work with a seasoned professional who wore many hats during his 40+ year tenure at Burnside. I received the benefit of his wisdom and insight as to how to enter new markets, build local relationships, and trust in different cultures. I frequently benefited from his mentorship, despite our differing roles.

The seasoned professional to whom I refer is Rui DeCarvalho, and the young professional is his son Peter DeCarvalho. It was a humbling experience to recognize that while I was enjoying mentorship from the father, I was able to provide mentorship to the son.
